15 Nov Wind Creek State Park – Alexander City, AL
A good bit Southeast of Birmingham, AL lies the town of Alexander City. The town pretty much has all the basics you’d expect from a community of its size. Just a few miles away is the huge man-made impoundment named Lake Martin. When the Martin Dam was completed in 1926 the reservoir that it created formed the largest man-made body of water in the world at the time. The sprawling lake goes into three counties and is chock full of sporting fish with species like. striped bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, channel cats, and spotted bass.
On Lake Martin you can find one of our very favorite State Parks, Wind Creek State Park. I’ll go ahead and say that we were pleased to give them a wonderful overall rating of 4 1/2 Pickles! The great rating was not too badly damaged by the fact that we had a terrible campsite located on a small cove and the water table was down quite a bit from the normal. The site, C-102 was a tight back-in site and the neighbors sewage hose connection was within 30′ of where we were supposed to be sitting, grilling, smoking cigars and entertaining new friends! The other problem with the site was that it was a slope as you back in down towards the water and very unnerving as we’re trying to unhitch, level, etc. for our five-night visit.
We did have 30 amp service, water and sewer connection and ok views. The very best sites here are 157-195. They offer a ton of different site and pricing ranges from $22 to $55 depending on Base camp vs. Premium and the days of the week with of course the weekends being more expensive.
The overall beauty of the Park was obvious but you’d have to walk a few minutes to get up into the huge picnic areas, snack shack, fishing pier, shelters with fireplaces and abundant picnic tables scattered around. We bought some firewood ($7.35 small bag), packed some lunch and drove over to one of the shelters with the fireplace and had a dandy time! Just the two of us, with music, snacks and fried up burgers. Pickle loved the outing cause we owned the place…even though the campground was very busy no one used the pavillions. Pickle was off leash most of the time and ran till he was knocked out!
The park staff seemed lean and somewhat tired of apparently a busy season. The check-in was a non-plus experience. The park was clean, the bathroom facilities were clean and temperature controlled. We saw lots a happy kids riding their bikes and whooping and hollering – we love it. We really enjoyed meeting three neighboring campers – photo below dubbed: “Three Peaches and a Pickle” – Dakota, Kayden & Delaney.
At sunset the park seems to come alive with beautiful sunsets reflecting throughout the parks campsites. Drinks are at the ready, the firepits are made ready and the grills begin to heat up!
The Campground Store, Marina and Laundry were all in good working order and the store well-stocked. Boat rentals are available. Propane available on site.
BIG Park, lots of beautiful water, vast picnic areas and probably best in the summer months. Don’t miss this one if you’re looking for a fun spot, especially with kids. Dates of our visit were: November 7-12, 2018

Posted at 18:27h, 03 DecemberHow far from Atlanta is this beautiful place? I want to travel when retirement comes in 10 years. How was the fishing? Is the water very deep there? What temperature did you experience during your visit? I heard it rains quite often so when is the best time to visit?
Thanks
